Piano vs. Harpsichord

They look a lot alike, but there are some very distinct differences between a piano and a harpsichord.

  • Have you seen the small hammers that make sound in the piano? These are missing on the harpsichord, whose strings are actually plucked to make sound.

  • Harpsichords are much smaller, with a 5-octave range (pianos have a 7 1/4 octave range). This allows pianos to play higher and lower notes!

  • I piano has the ability to piano or forte, lending drama and interest to songs. Harpsichords do not have this same ability, so all of the notes are played at the same volume level.
